Ever since I heard of the movie Fried Green Tomatoes in the 1990s, I have been curious as to how it tastes. It took me almost 20 years to find out. If I was limited to just one word to describe it, I would have to say: Scrumptious! I was recently reminded of it’s existence from a picture that was posted by MasterChef 3 contestant Josh Marks! So when I found some green tomatoes at the grocery among the delightfully red and ripe, I quickly grabbed. The next day I decided to make them. I knew that they are dipped and coated with a crispy coating and fried. Here I present to you the results and how I got there 🙂
Fried Green Tomatoes
Ingredients:
1 large green Tomato, cut into round slices about 1/4″ thickness
1 egg, lightly beaten
2-3 tspn corn flour
1 cup Italian Seasoned Breadcrumbs
Salt and pepper to taste
Oil for frying
Sprinkle the tomato slices with salt and pepper. Now lightly coat each slice with corn flour on both sides. Dip into egg and then coat with breadcrumbs. Shake of any excess breadcrumb. In the meantime heat some oil in a frying pan. Once the oil is hot, on medium heat, fry the tomato slices until golden. Serve hot.
I heard about the fried green tomato dish before but never tried it myself. It sounds really good and refreshing with tomatoes as ingredient. 🙂
It was very nice and refreshing. And the bonus was how easy and quick it was to make it 🙂 I would highly recommend trying it. I believe the dish is traditionally coated with corn meal and not breadcrumbs. I didn’t have any corn meal so used breadcrumbs instead.
Can these be baked? Not too fan of fried food.
I pan fried them but I don’t see why they can’t be baked. I would spray a little oil or pam on them before baking.
