This dish is inspired by the South Indian food dosa and the other foods that accompany it. When I decided to try dosa and idli at home, I had one request from my husband, that I should keep a meat dish to go with it. Well traditionally dosa is served with vegetarian dishes and chutneys. In my search, I was unable to find a non-vegetarian recipe that people served with dosa. Alas I was left to experiment and came up with the following. Some of the use of spices was inspired by the spices that are used with the dishes served with dosa like sambar, aloo-masala (spiced potato) etc.
Ground Beef With South Indian Inspiration!
Ingredients:
1/4 tsp mustard seeds
1/8 tsp fenugreek seeds (methi)
10-12 curry leaves
1 medium onions, finely diced
2 tsp garlic paste
1 1/2 tsp ginger paste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp Kashmiri chili powder, adjust to taste
1 tsp sweet paprika
1/2 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp coriander powder
salt to taste
1/2 lb lean ground beef
green chili (optional)
oil for cooking
Heat oil in a wok or frying pan and add mustard and fenugreek seeds until they crackle. Add the curry leaves and cook for a few more seconds and then add the onion. Cook the onions until they are transparent and starts to turn light golden. Add ginger and garlic pastes. Cook for another minute or two. Add the powder spices one at a time. Once these spices are all incorporated together, add some water and cook the spice mixture until oil separates. Add the beef and mix well with the spice. Add about a cup of water and cook the beef. Add salt. Once beef is fully cooked and all the water is almost gone, add the green chili and take it off the heat. The heat from the meat will slightly cook the chili and infuse the chili aroma without the heat. Serve it with rice or chapati, naan, even dosa like I did for someone who can not have a meal without animal protein. It was actually delisicous with dosa. This goes to show, try something new and you might just discover something new 😀

Your husband sounds like myself! I do love vegetarian food but then after it is over I look for something non veg….too funny!
I think this is a great recipe to go with plain steamed rice.
Your husband sounds like what my one says! There’s something about men and their love for meat 😉
I don’t mind meat but some days I like to pretend I am a vegetarian 🙂
